| 2009-07-17 19:37 | LeandroJF | I always liked to look how close I was from my competitors, so almost every day I accessed the Closest Competitors page to compare my population with their population.
But I always asked myself, "When I will be able to surpass my competitor's population?". Based on this question I developed a Greasemonkey Script that tell me when aproximately I will surpass my competitor population. After using it a while and fixing some little bugs that appeared, I thought this script could be useful for someone else. So I decided to post it here in the forum. For those that don't know Greasemonkey, it's a Firefox extension and here is a little description of it: "Greasemonkey is a Mozilla Firefox add-on that allows users to install scripts that make on-the-fly changes to most HTML-based web pages (also known as augmented browsing). As Greasemonkey scripts are persistent, the changes made to the web pages are executed every time the page is opened, making them effectively permanent for the user running the script. Greasemonkey can be used for adding new functions to web pages (for example, embedding price comparison in Amazon.com web pages), fixing rendering bugs, combining data from multiple webpages, and numerous other purposes." If you are interested in this script you need to have Greasemonkey Installed in your browser, the Extension page is: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/748 Or you can install it directly from: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/latest/748/addon-748-latest.xpi?src=addondetail After installing it you will need to restart your firefox To install my script go to "http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/53858" and click on "Install" button. After installing my script, just access the "http://utopia.lv/exchange/?do=mmc_competitors" page and you will see the script in action. I hope you enjoy it. Just a little comment. As my city is the first in my country, it appears in top position in closest competitors list. But the script assumes the owners city will be at the 4th position and displays city growth relative to it. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3624/competitors.png You can filter owner's city by HTML class name "table_highlight". I have updated my script, to solve this problem. and added more two features. First: Now this script tells you if any competitor below are growing faster than your city and when probably he will surpass your population. Second: If you have more than one myminicity links in utopia, it will calculates the times for all tables, not only for the first one as it was doing before. I have just installed your Grease Monkey script and it is working well. The first time I viewed your alternative Competitors screen I was puzzled by what it said, not realising that it was giving a countdown, but now that it has collected all the data it is giving all the information you said it would. :( In a way it is quite depressing to see how long it is going to take to overtake the cities above us but knowing whether someone below us is gaining on us will be very useful. A few years ago (when my computer went FUBAR and I was forced to buy a new one) I wanted to install the myminicity script - and the userscripts server looked like dead. Now, a few years (yes, that is my problem... too much time for anything... ;-) ) after that, I wanted to complain about that, but I tested the link just to be sure - and it works? What the...? Thanks to the person who made the script available again :-) |
